The AP904 improves water quality and taste while supply cleaner, clearer water to every water source point in the house. These systems are referred to as point-of-entry (POE) systems and are installed downstream from the water meter or well pump. These systems help protect plumbing and fixtures while reducing unpleasant taste and odor. Maintenance of a whole-house water filter system is as simple as replacing a light bulb with a simple quarter turn of the 3M Aqua-Pure AP917HD-S Replacement Water Filter Cartridge or placing a service call with your local plumbing professional (please refer to your installation manual or replacement instruction card). The scale inhibition feature uses polyphosphates in minute quantities to bind calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, preventing them from precipitating out and building up on metallic surfaces which can reduce flow rates throughout the home’s plumbing system. 1″ stainless steel inlet and outlet connections provide easy installation for a plumbing professional and peak flow rates up to 20 gpm to meet the needs of residential applications. The innovative Sanitary Quick Change (SQC) design, an industry first for this application, allows for fast and easy cartridge change-outs without having to contact the filter media or the need for a filter wrench. The AP904 is manufactured with a head assembly that includes an integral mounting bracket. The 304 stainless steel head can be installed on existing copper pipes in the home. Step 1:Turn off water supply, turn on a faucet to release water pressure and turn off the valve after the filter. |
Step 2:Slide the locking latch and lift it up. With both hands, twist out the filter cartridge by turning it to the left and down. |

Review of the AP904.Installed 6 months ago. It is a filter, not a softener, and does exactly as listed in the description.We had bad scale and sediment build up, after installation the difference was pretty obvious, but I gave this 6 month to properly give perspective on the product. Installation was easy, if you know how to plumb, otherwise have an experienced plumber do this. Makes sure to write the date and water as shown on your meter to track and know when to change the filter. Granted it is rated for 100k gallons but understand how to convert that to cubit feet so you know. Our town is rural and uses ground water so I suspect I will likely need to change at 75k gallons but I will see when the flow starts to diminish.Swapping the filter is super easy. The easiest filter swap hands down.I do recommend this for folks not wanting to invest in a house softener.

I own this and got it installed about 3 weeks ago.I have city water. I did testing beforehand and saw that my tap water was high in alkalinity and calcium. I had a plumber install the full version of this filter that includes the descaler. Plumber had to cut open a hole in my townhouse garage wall. $1,400 for plumber. Great result though with very nice looking piping, very discreet and right up against the wall. The water was immediately noticeably better, after a 5-10 minute flush of the filter. Even though it is just a water conditioner/descaler rather than a softener, it has a significant softening effect. The chrome and glass in my bathrooms have already improved a lot in just a few weeks.I would say the water smells, tastes, and feels 80% better. Super easy to change the filter, so no reason this won’t work perfectly for 20+ years. They could possibly even upgrade the replacement filter cartridge design in the future.It did reduce my water pressure 5-10%, not enough to care, but that was probably partially due to the loop in piping my plumber had to make. It does seem like the water pressure has improved a little recently though, so it is possible the descaler has helped increase the diameter of the piping throughout the house by loosening up some of the lime buildup in the pipes.It is most noticeable when just washing your hands. The water has a slightly slippery feel like a water softener, although only about half as slippery. I think water any softer feeling than this would be overkill. My plumber said that his company usually rebrands a nearly identical water filter to this and charges over $1,100 for it, so this is a great deal comparatively.Hard to imagine really needing more filtration or softening than this. I wouldn’t waste the water pressure or time or money on a prefilter for this if you have city water; just replace the filter every so often. Over the years, it probably pays for itself at least halfway due to the increased life you get from your water heater, dishwasher, clothes washer, toilets, faucets, and fridge.I rate the overall effect and quality of this product a 9 out of 10.I still use a Brita for my drinking water because I didn’t want to just throw it out, and it seems like this filtered water going into your Brita makes your Brita filters last way longer if you still want to use that.
The good, the bad and the ugly –
I have been buying these filters for 7 years now, they work well. I just wish they were more affordable. I run these as whole house filters as designed and use a pre-filter in front of it to extend the life. I always look for Amazon Warehouse deals on this item, or just as well buy the whole setup all over again instead of the replacement filters. The -S model does make a difference. I replace at least yearly if not a little less than a year. If you set up your system right the pre filter will have a water shut off on it, that makes changing the main filter easy enough without shutting water off to the house. Mine is under the house in the crawl space. A long ways away from the entry point so that is a must. I leave a box of pre-filters at the location, so I am not crawling back if I forget to take that one when replacing this main filter. The system is worth it, when we first moved here you couldn’t drink the water, wife said it tastes like pond water. LOL This solved that problem. Water is triple filtered by the time it comes out of the refrigerator and calcium, rust and lime at the kitchen and bathroom fixtures is definitely minimized. I trust 3M products, so this was an easy decision.

Be sure you get the metal housing that holds this filter in place. Easy to install filter and replace filter. Metal housing has an easy twist and turn filter to lock in place on replacing filter. Lasts about a year with our private well, but we have a water softener before it goes through this filter into the house. These are expensive, but best price was here at Amazon!
