A capacitor is an electric component that temporarily stores an electrical charge. A “run capacitor” supports electric motors, such as in air conditioner or heat pump units, a fan motor and a compressor motor. The capacitor has two terminals. Capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF or MFD), such as 40 plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, as it is build better, but the 370 can’t be used in place of a 440 volt. It will work for a while and will fail prematurely, as exceeding the capacitor’s rated voltage will cause the dielectric to break down and the capacitor to short out. Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 47.5 to 55 µF with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor . Round oval-shaped run capacitors are commonly used for air conditioning, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.

Works as it should. I did a preemptive replacement on my outside A/C fan last Fall. It’s been working fine, specially considering how hot the Summer has been this year (2024). Yah I would buy again.

The fit was perfect and it cooled as if was the original. Mybhusband had no problems replacing it and it had a smooth install.

Air conditioner repair company wanted $595 plus $79 to install new compressor capacitor in our AC compressor. I bought this one with free shipping for $15.99 and installed it myself. No brainer!!! FYI, it’s a dual cap; i.e. high Mfd section is the compressor starter and low Mfd section is the fan starter.

I installed this capacitor in our a/c two days ago, and it is working fine so far. It is a direct replacement in all ratings and terminal locations. I had already replaced the original capacitor with separate 45uf and 5uf capacitors a few years ago, so I can’t speak to the exact size and mounting clamp being the same or different as the original. This unit was easy to mount and is secure using the mounting clamp I made. One common reason for failure of this type of capacitor is power line fluctuations. That can occur if the power shuts off unexpectedly (e.g. storm), from lightning nearby, power spikes, and other types of power problems that cause voltage instability. Over time, the capacitor’s performance will degrade until it fails. This is true of all polymer capacitors, not just the one from this supplier. I keep a spare capacitor because of the occasional power fluctuations we have in our area. I will be ordering a second capacitor from this supplier so I still have a spare.

I spend 24 extra hours without AC because the repair company didn’t have the part in stock. I bought this so if it fails I can get a repair immediately.

Save yourself a few hundred dollars! Do it yourself with just $20. Simple to do and fit perfectly!

After my ac quit cooling, I had to call a hvac technician. Turns out the compressor was not working. Quick fix with one of these. Bottom line…you can swap one of these yourself. The capacitor was covered by warrantee, service call $260.00 was not. I bought 2 to have on hand for the next time!

Although it did not fix my issue, it is still working just fine 2 months later. These are a very common failure point in ac systems, and being 8 years old, it was good insurance to go ahead and replace it anyways.
